Performance considerations in stator selection for high shear rotor-stator mixers
Abstract
Stator geometry is a primary process variable in high shear rotor-stator mixing because it governs hydraulic restriction, discharge area, local velocity gradients, and the frequency of shear generating passage events. These effects directly influence pumping capacity, pressure drop, energy dissipation, recirculation, solids tolerance, fouling tendency, and final dispersion quality. This article reviews the process implications of common stator geometries, including coarse disintegrating, square hole, slotted, fine screen, and multistage or toothed heads. Stator selection should therefore be treated as a first order engineering decision tied to process objective, rheology, and scale up path.
